After party info

Just a heads up. After we get spanked at the awards night (I kid, I kid) we are all going celebrate/commiserate at Stefano's Italian Grill. Paul, the sweet talker that he is, has gotten us the prestigious outdoor porch reserved for after the awards. If you've got the stomach for it, the kitchen and of course the bar stays open until 2, so we can par-tay in style. 3333 Beach Blvd., really easy to find and lots of parking.

And don't think this is an exclusive after party. If you are from another team and don't beat us in anything, please come join the fun!

And the nominees are...

So tonight, Mac announced the nominees for the upcoming awards show. He did this at the swanky Walker's Bar, which my Google-fu tells me is a wine bar. This little joke was not lost on me, and I hope it wasn't lost on any Dauberts in attendance.

We were nominated for 11 (!) things this go around, something which makes me smile with pride. Knights and Squires, Smooth Move and Bonnie's Wake, along with Argyle Forest Films are probably going to actually win all of those awards, but still... it's nice to be nominated. Har har har!

Here they are:

Best Use of Line
Best Director
Best Writing
Best Actress
Best Acting Ensemble
Cinematography
Audio Mixing
Sound Design
Editing
Graphics
Audience Choice Group A
Best Picture

That's a freaking hefty amount of nominations. We did great! And I got two fist-bumps and a high five from Joy, who I consider the writing boss, so that made it all worthwhile!

Wish us luck next Saturday at awards night!

Screening night part 3...

... or as I like to think of it, Best of night. Good lord where did these teams come from!?!?

Just gonna jump in with some thoughts of the movies tonight.

Team Chicken- I know they have some experience with casual murder with their film last year, but those kids took a DARK turn this year. Gunplay by (possible) minors? Check! Road movie that ends with a gasoline-soaked lover's murder-suicide? Check! Slightly disturbed Somebody Call an Ambulance Productions audience members? Check!

Grimm Chance- They freaking mind-robbed me!! I have been joking with Paul to make a mockumentary about the porno industry for two years now! Well, no more I say!! These guys took the concept further than I could have ever gone and made my favorite movie of the night. Now I need to think of a new idea to pester Paul with... maybe something with zombies.... oh wait, nevermind.

Argyle Forest Films- These people are pure geniuses. How the hell can you compete with a buddy movie about a dude being cursed and turned into a lamp!?? And he has a girlfriend! You need to invent a new -ality word just to describe their relations!

X.O.F.- I think we need to have a back alley brawl with these people. They snuck in a subtle rib at us in their flick that was just incredible. "Hey, should somebody call an ambulance?" "Nah, f*ck em!" Okay, now!

T-U Productions out-romanced us with freaking sci-fi! Cute concept executed very well. Our buddies did a great job.

And just to add icing on the cake, another team made a horror movie that actually freaked me out! Little possessed/ghost girls can do that, I guess.

Everyone stepped up their game this year, like I said, but I still think we made a contender. I am definitely confident about, of course, our use of dialog, and I think Ralin was an incredible Tina Daubert. Matt has a run for his money with the dude who played the wish-giving hobo in tonight's fantasy movie, even though I think he kinda Johnny-Depped it too much.

One more thing... much respect to any other movie that didn't use the word "connoisseur" because actions speak louder than words.

I Love a Good Challenge

I am getting tired of hearing this line. Not to toot our own horn, but I think we did a great job of incorporating this line into the movie in a way that made it flow well and not sound forced. This is something I know can be hard to do, but some of the offerings just didn't get it.

Also, connoisseur is not a job or even a title. This is all.

Second screening night

So tonight was the second screening night. Somebody Call an Ambulance wasn't quite an army tonight, more like a tactical strike force, but it was still fun.

Tonight was the "family friendly" night, or it could also be called the "best movies ever" night. Several teams had some strong showings, but I still say we have best use of line, har har.

If Mugwumps don't get audience choice I will eat a bug. Sam yanked "silent movie" as his genre and his family really stepped up their game this year. I laughed throughout their movie, which was Sam and his dad trying to outdrink each other. I hope I didn't splatter his family in the row behind me with my brains when my mind was blown. I know that's kinda gross, but it is a lovely segueway into the next movie I loved.

"I Love You for Your Brains" continued this year's zombie theme by doing what we toyed around with doing, a zombie romance! It totally worked and I loved it. The ending shot of the girl and her zombie boyfriend Necro walking/shambling hand in hand into the distance was beyond perfect.

PB&J was incredible this year as well, turning comedy into some kind of house party/zombie mashup.... thing... that was a sight to behold. I am definitely proud of those guys and their little alien friend.

The Alan Smithee Project was the one that made me jealous. They had fantasy, which a lot of people seem to see as a death sentence for the 48 hour Film Project. Those guys, only 8 people strong, turned it into a work of art. Their movie and Sam's was worth the price of admission alone.

Tonight was kind of humbling in a way, but now that I have had some time to reflect, I still think we have a shot for stuff. And I still like our movie. But I really don't care if we win anything (except for use of line). I have only done two of these movies and I am still definitely in the "just glad to be here" mentality. I hope that doesn't change.
